Rahm Secures Victory in Mexico as LIV Golf Asserts Its Commitment to Continue

Jon Rahm concluded a tumultuous week in LIV Golf by closing with a remarkable seven-under 64 on Sunday, securing a six-shot victory at LIV Golf Mexico City, his second win this year on the Saudi-backed circuit. The week was marked by uncertainty surrounding the Saudi-funded league, with CEO Scott O'Neil issuing a memo to staff stating that LIV is guaranteed funding through the end of the year, aiming to alleviate growing concerns about the league's financial stability. This move came in response to reports suggesting the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) is poised to terminate its financial support for the circuit. A power outage on Tuesday at the event in Mexico further fueled speculation, and the streaming service was interrupted for two hours during the opening round. However, LIV announced its return to Chapultepec Golf Club next year. Rahm, who went winless last season on LIV despite claiming the points title, experienced a turnaround, making a birdie on the reachable par-4 second hole and then holing out for eagle on the next, playing bogey-free throughout. "If you had told me last week on Thursday afternoon that I'd be winning by a six-shot margin this week, I wouldn't have believed you, given how poorly I played," Rahm said, referencing his previous performance. Bryson DeChambeau withdrew from the final round due to a wrist injury, citing his decision to prevent further aggravation. DeChambeau, who was attempting to become the first player to achieve three consecutive wins on LIV Golf, was 16 shots behind Rahm when he stopped playing. "I experienced some discomfort in my wrist during yesterday's round and have decided to withdraw from the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City to prevent further injury," DeChambeau stated in a social media post. "It didn't go as planned this week." DeChambeau expressed hopes to be evaluated and participate in LIV Golf Virginia on May 7-10, a week before the PGA Championship. Meanwhile, Rahm's Legion XIII team secured their first win of the year. David Puig finished second with a 66, earning valuable world ranking points and nearly guaranteeing his participation in the PGA Championship. With another top finish in Virginia, Puig may also qualify for the US Open. The next LIV Golf League event, LIV Golf Virginia, is scheduled to take place from May 7-10 at Trump National Golf Club in Washington DC.
