Fitzpatrick Holds Off Scheffler to Win RBC Heritage in Playoff

Matt Fitzpatrick claimed his second PGA Tour victory of the season after overcoming a late stumble to defeat world number one Scottie Scheffler in a playoff at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick, who had held a three-shot lead going into the final round at Harbour Town Golf Links, appeared to be in control after extending his advantage with two birdies in his first three holes. However, Scheffler mounted a late charge, closing with consecutive birdies to force a playoff after Fitzpatrick bogeyed the final hole. The playoff, which was the fourth in five years at the event, saw Fitzpatrick sink a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-four 18th to secure the win. 'I got off to a great start and knew Scottie would make a few birdies towards the end, so I had to hang in there,' Fitzpatrick said. The victory propelled Fitzpatrick to a career-high world ranking of third and made him the fourth Englishman to win multiple PGA Tour titles in the same season, joining Sir Nick Faldo, Justin Rose, and Luke Donald. Fitzpatrick's win also sets him up for a strong partnership with his brother Alex at the upcoming Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a two-man team event.
