England's women's rugby team is adapting to a series of setbacks as they prepare for their Six Nations match against Scotland, with coach John Mitchell emphasizing the team's resilience in the face of adversity. Five changes have been made to the starting lineup for the upcoming match, including the debut of 19-year-old Demelza Short as blindside flanker. Other new additions include fly-half Zoe Harrison, full-back Emma Sing, lock Abi Burton, and prop Maud Muir, as England seeks to build on their 33-12 victory over Ireland.
To accommodate these changes, Ellie Kildunne has been moved to the left wing, and Maddie Feaunati has shifted from blindside flanker to No 8, following Alex Matthews' injury. The team is dealing with a significant number of injuries, including those to Hannah Botterman, Morwenna Talling, Natasha Hunt, May Campbell, and Tatyana Heard, all of whom have been ruled out for the entire tournament. Furthermore, several players, including Zoe Stratford, Abbie Ward, Rosie Galligan, and Lark Atkin-Davies, are unavailable due to pregnancy. "The injuries to our teammates have forced us to make adjustments, but this is an integral part of the team culture we are building," Mitchell stated.
"It presents opportunities for other players to step up and showcases the depth we are continually developing, both for the present and the future. There is a strong desire within the group to keep pushing forward despite the challenges we face." The Red Roses have been particularly affected in the second row, with the loss of Talling, Ward, Galligan, and Stratford, resulting in Burton being reassigned from her usual back-row position.
Defence coach Sarah Hunter views the current test of the team's squad depth as a chance to prepare for the next World Cup in 2029. "The number of injuries we're experiencing is unusual for an England squad, but it may accelerate the development of younger players who could be part of the team in four years' time," Hunter said, adding that the severity of Matthews' injury is still being assessed. The starting XV includes: 15 Emma Sing, 14 Jess Breach, 13 Megan Jones (c), 12 Helena Rowland, 11 Ellie Kildunne, 10 Zoe Harrison, 9 Lucy Packer; 1 Kelsey Clifford, 2 Amy Cokayne, 3 Maud Muir, 4 Abi Burton, 5 Lilli Ives Campion, 6 Demelza Short, 7 Sadia Kabeya, 8 Maddie Feaunati.
Replacements are: 16 Connie Powell, 17 Mackenzie Carson, 18 Sarah Bern, 19 Haineala Lutui, 20 Marlie Packer, 21 Flo Robinson, 22 Holly Aitchison, 23 Mia Venner.
