Matt Fitzpatrick has secured his second PGA Tour victory of the season after a nail-biting play-off against world No 1 Scottie Scheffler at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick, who had taken a three-shot lead into the final day at Harbour Town Golf Links, seemed to be in control after posting two birdies in his first three holes.
However, Scheffler staged a late comeback, closing with back-to-back birdies to force a play-off after Fitzpatrick bogeyed the final hole. The Englishman regained his composure to fire his approach to 12 feet and roll in the birdie on the first extra hole, claiming his second RBC Heritage win in four years. The victory propels Fitzpatrick to a career-high world No 3 ranking and makes him the fourth Englishman to register multiple PGA Tour titles in the same season. Fitzpatrick's win came after a dramatic final round, where he extended his overnight advantage with a 10-foot birdie at the first but failed to capitalize on the par-five next.
A 15-foot birdie at the third restored a four-shot buffer, but Scheffler refused to give up, eventually closing the gap to force the play-off. The pair traded pars throughout the round, with Fitzpatrick holing from 15 feet to save par at the 11th and Scheffler producing a gutsy save from 10 feet at the 14th. Si Woo Kim temporarily cut the lead to two, but Scheffler's brilliant up and down from the sand at the 15th kept him in contention. Fitzpatrick's clunky chip from the back of the final green led to a two-putt bogey, but he composed himself to find the green in regulation on the first play-off hole, coaxing in for birdie to claim the win.
Scheffler's runner-up finish is his second in as many weeks, while Kim finished two strokes back in third spot. Fitzpatrick will now partner his brother Alex Fitzpatrick at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a two-man team event at TPC Louisiana.
