A new grass-court ATP 250 tournament is coming to Milan in 2028, with the iconic San Siro stadium being considered as a potential venue. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to the tournament, which was previously held in Brussels.
The event will take place in June and is expected to be held in northern Italy due to climate reasons. San Siro, with its massive capacity of over 75,000, could be the ideal location. The federation's president, Angelo Binaghi, mentioned that the decision on the venue is still pending, but the fact that the Madrid Open is introducing practice courts inside Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium makes San Siro a viable option. Italy has previously hosted a WTA tournament on grass in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024.
The federation is also hosting other prominent tennis events, including the ATP Finals in Turin and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna. Additionally, work on a retractable roof for the Campo Centrale at the Foro Italico is set to begin soon, with the aim of completing it in time for the 2028 edition. Binaghi expressed his ambition to make the tournament in Rome a fifth Grand Slam, rivaling the likes of Indian Wells and joining the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open as one of the sport's biggest tournaments.
