Rahm Secures Victory in Mexico as LIV Golf Affirms Its Commitment to Continue

Jon Rahm concluded a tumultuous week on the LIV Golf circuit with a resounding victory, carding a seven-under 64 on Sunday to claim a six-shot win at the LIV Golf Mexico City event, marking his second triumph this year on the Saudi-backed tour. Amidst uncertainty surrounding the league's financial stability, CEO Scott O'Neil reassured staff that funding was secured through the end of the year, countering reports that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) was set to withdraw its financial support. A power outage on Tuesday and a two-hour streaming interruption during the opening round further fueled speculation about the league's future. However, LIV Golf announced its return to Chapultepec Golf Club next year. Rahm, who went winless last season despite claiming the points title, began strongly with a birdie on the second hole and an eagle on the next, playing bogey-free throughout. In a surprising turn of events, Rahm's victory came after a disappointing performance at the Masters, where he tied for 38th. "I wouldn't have believed you if you told me I'd be winning by a six-shot margin this week, given how poorly I played," Rahm reflected. Bryson DeChambeau withdrew from the final round due to a wrist injury, citing concerns about aggravating the condition. DeChambeau, who was attempting to become the first player to win three consecutive LIV Golf events, was 16 shots behind Rahm at the time of his withdrawal. "I experienced discomfort in my wrist during yesterday's round and have decided to withdraw from the final round to prevent further injury," DeChambeau explained in a social media post. He hopes to recover in time for the LIV Golf Virginia event on May 7-10. Rahm's Legion XIII team also secured their first win of the year, while David Puig finished second with a 66, earning valuable world ranking points and likely securing his spot in the PGA Championship. Puig is also poised to potentially qualify for the US Open with another strong finish in Virginia. The next LIV Golf League event is scheduled to take place from May 7-10 at Trump National Golf Club in Washington DC.
