Exeter Claims Victory Over Benetton with Slade's Decisive Penalty

In a nail-biting finish, Exeter secured a 44-41 win over Benetton, with Henry Slade's late penalty proving to be the decisive factor. The victory sets up a semi-final showdown against Ulster in Belfast. Benetton had taken the lead with 15 minutes remaining, courtesy of Jacob Umaga's try, but Slade's precision kicking ultimately sealed the deal for Exeter. The home fans were left frustrated as Slade split the posts once more in the 78th minute to snatch victory. The first half was a frantic affair, with Exeter establishing a 14-7 lead through Olly Woodburn's score and a penalty try. They extended their advantage to 24-14 after Immanuel Feyi-Waboso's try and Slade's conversion and penalty. However, Benetton fought back to level the scores by halftime, thanks to an outstanding try from Onisi Ratave and Umaga's conversion and penalty. Exeter regained the lead early in the second half through Harvey Skinner's converted try, only for Bautista Bernasconi to draw Benetton level once more. Andrea Zambonin's try in the 48th minute put Exeter ahead 38-31, but Umaga's second penalty and subsequent try gave Benetton their first lead since the eighth minute. Nevertheless, Slade's kicking prowess had the final say. In another quarter-final match, Investec Champions Cup holders Bordeaux overcame Toulouse 30-15 to set up a semi-final against Bath. Bordeaux's defence held firm against Toulouse's strong start, before Maxime Lamothe powered over in the 23rd minute. Toulouse responded instantly, but a red card for Dorian Aldegheri late in the first half hindered their progress. Despite this, they took a 12-5 lead into the break. Bordeaux rallied in the second half, with Matthieu Jalibert collecting his own kick-through and diving over. Ben Tameifuna's try and Maxime Lucu's long-range penalty gave Bordeaux control of the tie, and Arthur Retiere's late try sealed the win. Lucu's subsequent penalty ended any hopes of a Toulouse comeback.
