Sinner Overtakes Alcaraz to Regain World No 1 Spot After Monte Carlo Victory

Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the world's top ranking after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Masters final. Sinner navigated the windy conditions in Monaco more effectively than his opponent, securing a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win to claim the top spot in the ATP rankings for the first time since November 2025. Although the match did not reach the same level of intensity as some of the duo's previous encounters, it was marked by several twists, including Sinner's comeback from a second-set deficit. This victory marks Sinner's first win over Alcaraz on clay since 2022 and extends his unbeaten run at Masters tournaments to 22 matches. Sinner joins Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as one of the few men to have won four consecutive ATP 1000 titles. "The outcome is amazing, and returning to the No 1 spot means a great deal to me," Sinner stated. "However, the ranking is secondary; I'm thrilled to have won a major trophy on this surface for the first time." Alcaraz praised Sinner, saying, "It's impressive what you're achieving right now. Winning the Sunshine Double and Monte-Carlo is incredible. Congratulations on the work you're doing with your team." The 17th meeting between tennis' current superstars will not be remembered as a classic, as both players struggled with the windy and overcast conditions. Alcaraz initially broke Sinner but was unable to maintain his lead, and the first set ultimately went to a tie-break, which Sinner won after 74 minutes. In the second set, Alcaraz broke early but was unable to hold his serve, allowing Sinner to capitalize on his errors and secure the win. Sinner and Alcaraz may face each other again in Barcelona, where Britain's Jack Draper will also be competing, before the ATP 1000 events in Madrid and Rome leading up to the French Open. Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva won the Linz Open with a 1-6 6-4 6-3 victory over Anastasia Potapova, claiming her second WTA title and fourth career title. Andreeva praised Potapova, saying, "I was struggling to find a solution to play against you today. You're an amazing fighter and an even better person." Potapova, who switched allegiance to Austria in December, expressed gratitude for the crowd's support, stating, "Playing here for the first time as an Austrian means the world to me."
