Starting from 2028, Milan is set to host a grass-court ATP 250 tournament, potentially at the iconic San Siro stadium. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to the event, previously held in Brussels.
Federation president Angelo Binaghi announced that the tournament will take place every June, with San Siro, home to AC Milan and Inter Milan, being a likely venue due to its massive capacity of over 75,000. Although a final decision on the location is yet to be made, Binaghi hinted that northern Italy's climate makes it a favorable choice. The introduction of practice courts within Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu for the Madrid Open has set a precedent, making San Siro a viable option. Italy has previously hosted a WTA grass-court tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024.
Additionally, the federation is set to host the ATP Finals in Turin until 2030, the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna until next year, and the Rome Masters on clay before the French Open. The Italian Tennis Federation is also planning to install a retractable roof at the Foro Italico, with work scheduled to begin after this year's Internazionali BNL d'Italia, aiming for completion by the 2028 edition.
Binaghi expressed his ambition to elevate the Rome tournament to a Grand Slam level, rivaling Indian Wells and joining the ranks of the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. As the tennis season unfolds, Italian player Jannik Sinner is striving to become the first Italian man to win the singles title at the Foro Italico since Adriano Panatta's victory 50 years ago.
