Charlton has moved a step closer to securing their place in the Championship after a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday. The Addicks took an early lead in the second half through Matty Godden but were pegged back by Gabriel Otegbayo's equalizer with 15 minutes left to play.
The result sees Charlton move six points clear of the relegation zone with just three games remaining, while Wednesday remains unbeaten in their last three matches. The Addicks had the better of the early chances, with Godden heading wide from an offside position and Greg Docherty's effort being pushed away by keeper Pierce Charles. Wednesday thought they should have had a penalty when Tayo Adaramola was fouled, but the referee deemed the contact to be outside the box.
Charlton came closest to taking the lead before the break, with Godden's acrobatic effort hitting the crossbar. The Addicks made the perfect start to the second half, with Godden turning quickly and slotting the ball into the bottom corner to give his side the lead. Charlton could have doubled their advantage when Sonny Carey struck the inside of the post, while Godden was denied a second goal by Charles.
Wednesday began to gain momentum and found an equalizer in the 76th minute, as Otegbayo tapped the ball into an empty net after Charlton keeper Will Mannion failed to hold on to Sean Fusire's cross. Otegbayo could have won it for the Owls late on, but his effort at the back post was wide. The result means Wednesday must avoid defeat in their final game of the season to avoid becoming the first team to fail to win at home all season.
Sheffield Wednesday's manager, Henrik Pedersen, praised his team's performance, saying, 'This was a strong performance from the boys again. Sometimes we were maybe a bit loose on the ball, but to play with courage at this point in the season makes me so proud.' Charlton's manager, Nathan Jones, felt his team had dropped two points, saying, 'I think it is two points dropped for us today. They may have had most of the possession, but we coped with it well and we got to grips with it in the second half. We had all the big chances in the game.'
