Ten English Teams Could Compete in Europe Next Season with Six in the Champions League

Although the Premier League can no longer have 11 teams competing in European competitions next season, there is still a possibility for 10 teams to participate. Liverpool's elimination from the Champions League quarter-finals last week ended the hope of having 11 English teams in Europe in the 2026/27 season. However, with the Premier League now guaranteed to have five teams in the Champions League, at least eight English sides will compete in Europe. The two Europa League qualifying spots and a single Conference League space will be occupied by the teams finishing sixth, the FA Cup winners, and the team finishing seventh, respectively. The number of English teams in Europe could rise to 10 under certain circumstances. If Arsenal win the Champions League and finish outside the top four, this scenario could become a reality, although it is mathematically unlikely given their current position. A more plausible scenario is if an English team wins the Europa League, with Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest potentially meeting in the semi-finals. If Villa wins the competition but finishes outside the top four, the Premier League would have six teams in the Champions League. On the other hand, if Nottingham Forest wins the Europa League, they would directly qualify for the Champions League as the Premier League's sixth representative. The winners of the Conference League would qualify for the Europa League, potentially leading to nine or even ten English teams competing in Europe next season, depending on the results of the FA Cup and the final league standings.
