Charlton Moves Closer to Championship Safety with Draw Against Sheffield Wednesday

Charlton Athletic have edged closer to securing their place in the Championship for next season after a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday. The Addicks took the lead in the 49th minute through Matty Godden, but Gabriel Otegbayo equalized for the Owls with 15 minutes left to play. The result sees Charlton move six points clear of the relegation zone with just three games remaining, while Wednesday are now unbeaten in their last three matches. The visitors had the better of the early chances, with Godden heading wide from an offside position and Max Lowe dragging a shot wide from distance. Charlton captain Greg Docherty also had a shot pushed away by keeper Pierce Charles. The Owls were denied a penalty when Tayo Adaramola was fouled, but the referee deemed the contact to have been outside the box. Godden was not to be denied for long, as he turned quickly and scored from a Lloyd Jones flick-on. Charlton came close to a second when Sonny Carey struck the inside of the post, while Godden was also denied a second goal by a comfortable save from Charles. Wednesday started to grow into the game and found the equalizer when Charlton keeper Will Mannion couldn't hold on to a cross, allowing Otegbayo to tap the ball into an empty net. The Owls could have stolen all three points late on, but Otegbayo's effort from a cross at the back post was wide. The result means that Wednesday must win their final game of the season against West Brom to avoid becoming the first team to fail to win at home in an entire campaign. Sheffield Wednesday's manager Henrik Pedersen praised his team's performance, saying: 'This was a strong performance from the boys again. Sometimes we were maybe a bit loose on the ball, but to play with courage at this point in the season makes me so proud.' Charlton's manager Nathan Jones felt that his team had dropped two points, saying: 'I think it is two points dropped for us today. They may have had most of the possession, but we coped with it well and we got to grips with it in the second half. We had all the big chances in the game.'
