Fitzpatrick Edges Out Scheffler in Thrilling PGA Tour Play-off

Matt Fitzpatrick has claimed his second PGA Tour victory of the season, overcoming a late stumble to defeat world number one Scottie Scheffler in a play-off at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick began the final day with a three-shot lead at Harbour Town Golf Links and extended his advantage with two birdies in the first three holes. However, Scheffler mounted a late challenge, closing with consecutive birdies to force a play-off after Fitzpatrick bogeyed the final hole. The Englishman regained his composure, firing his approach to 12 feet on the first extra hole and sinking the birdie to secure his second RBC Heritage title in four years. This win propels Fitzpatrick to a career-high world ranking of third and makes him the fourth Englishman to achieve multiple PGA Tour victories in the same season. Fitzpatrick started strongly, with a 10-foot birdie at the first, but Scheffler remained in contention, tidying up from close range at the second to stay within three shots. A 15-foot birdie at the third gave Fitzpatrick a four-shot cushion, but Scheffler refused to give up, eventually closing the gap to one shot with a six-foot birdie at the 16th. Fitzpatrick's victory was sealed when he birdied the first play-off hole, while Scheffler could only manage a par. Scheffler's runner-up finish is his second in as many weeks, following his close second place at The Masters. The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where Fitzpatrick will partner his brother Alex in a two-man team event.
