Sinner Regains Top Spot in ATP Rankings After Defeating Alcaraz in Monte Carlo

Following his victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final, Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the world No 1 spot. Sinner outperformed Alcaraz in the challenging, windy conditions in Monaco, securing a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win and taking the top position in the ATP rankings for the first time since November 2025. Although the match did not reach the same level of intensity as some of the duo's previous encounters, it was marked by several twists and turns, including Sinner's comeback from a second-set deficit. This victory marks Sinner's first win over Alcaraz on clay since 2022 and extends his unbeaten streak at Masters tournaments to 22 matches. Sinner expressed his delight at regaining the top spot, stating, 'The result is amazing. Returning to No 1 means a great deal to me.' He also joins Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as one of the few men to have won four consecutive ATP 1000 titles. Alcaraz praised Sinner, saying, 'It's impressive what you're achieving right now. To win the Sunshine Double and Monte-Carlo is incredible. Congratulations on the work you're doing with your team.' The 17th meeting between the two tennis superstars was not a classic, with both players struggling in the overcast, windy conditions. Despite a strong start by Alcaraz, who broke Sinner early on, the latter managed to level the score at 2-2. Neither player could gain a decisive advantage in the first set, with Sinner ultimately emerging victorious in the tie-break. In the second set, Alcaraz initially broke Sinner but was unable to maintain his lead, allowing Sinner to capitalize on his errors and win the next three games. Sinner's victory marks his first Monte-Carlo Masters title. The two players will now decide whether to compete against each other again in Barcelona, where Britain's Jack Draper will also be in action. Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva won the Linz Open on Sunday, defeating Anastasia Potapova 1-6 6-4 6-3. Andreeva had to come back from a set down to claim her second WTA title and fourth career title. She praised Potapova, saying, 'You're an amazing fighter and an even better person.' Potapova, who switched allegiance to Austria in December, expressed her gratitude for the support she received from the crowd, stating, 'Playing here for the first time as an Austrian means the world to me.'
