Milan's San Siro Stadium May Host ATP 250 Grass-Court Event from 2028

The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to host a 250-level ATP Tour tournament, previously held in Brussels, and will relocate it to Milan starting in 2028. The event, which will take place in June, is expected to be held at the San Siro stadium, home to AC Milan and Inter Milan, with a seating capacity of over 75,000. According to federation president Angelo Binaghi, the final decision on the venue has not been made, but the San Siro is a strong contender due to its location in northern Italy, which provides a more favorable climate for grass-court tennis. The introduction of practice courts inside the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid has set a precedent for hosting tennis events in large stadiums, making the San Siro a viable option. Italy has previously hosted a WTA grass-court tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. The federation is also hosting several other prominent tennis events, including the ATP Finals in Turin and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna. Additionally, work on a retractable roof for the Campo Centrale at the Foro Italico is scheduled to begin after this year's Internazionali BNL d'Italia, with the goal of completing it in time for the 2028 edition. Binaghi has expressed his ambition to establish the Rome Masters as a fifth Grand Slam tournament, rivaling the likes of Indian Wells and the existing Grand Slam events. Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner is also aiming to make history by becoming the first Italian man to win the singles title at the Foro Italico since Adriano Panatta's victory 50 years ago.
