England's Joe Launchbury Announces Retirement from Rugby

Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed that he will be hanging up his boots at the end of the current season. With 70 international caps to his name between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury has enjoyed a storied career, claiming three Six Nations championships and participating in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Since joining Harlequins in 2023 from Japan's Toyota Verblitz, Launchbury has made 50 appearances for the club, although he has been limited to just six outings this term. Launchbury reflected on his decision, stating, "The time has come to step away from rugby, and it feels right to do so at the end of this season." He expressed his gratitude to his teammates, both past and present, saying, "The friendships we've forged go far beyond the sport itself. I've been fortunate to have such wonderful teammates, and I've enjoyed every moment spent with them, even on the toughest of days." Launchbury also acknowledged the profound impact rugby has had on his life, saying, "The sport has given me so much more than I ever could have dreamed of - a sense of purpose, lasting friendships, and memories that will stay with me forever." He added, "I've given my all to my career, but my body is now telling me it's time for a break. While I'd love to remain involved in the sport in some capacity, I'm excited to see what the future holds, and I'm looking forward to being able to watch my children grow up."
