Newcastle United's quest for European qualification has been dealt another significant setback following a late 2-1 loss to Bournemouth, a team that has now extended its unbeaten run in the Premier League to 13 matches. This fixture was one that Newcastle needed to win, especially after suffering consecutive defeats to Sunderland and Crystal Palace. However, the outcome has pushed them further away from the European picture, increasing the pressure on manager Eddie Howe. Newcastle's inability to close out games has once again been called into question.
On the other hand, Bournemouth, under the management of Andoni Iraola, showed no signs of distraction despite the announcement that Iraola would be leaving the club at the end of the season. They dominated the first half, with Newcastle struggling to cope with their press. Bournemouth took the lead just after the half-hour mark when Marcus Tavernier scored from Rayan's pass. The Cherries could have doubled their lead soon after with a similar move, but Evanilson failed to capitalize on Alex Scott's delivery.
In a turn of events, Alex Scott almost scored an own goal, but Djordje Petrovic made a superb stop late in the half to deny Newcastle. At halftime, Lewis Hall was substituted out for Kieran Trippier in what appeared to be an injury-related change. However, there was positive news for Newcastle in the 62nd minute when captain Bruno Guimaraes made his return after a two-month absence to a great ovation. Guimaraes's influence was quickly felt as Newcastle equalized.
Initially, it was thought that Guimaraes's pass had found Will Osula, who scored after holding off his defender. Although the offside flag was raised, VAR reviewed the goal and determined that Evanilson had gotten the final touch before Osula, making Osula's goal valid. However, Newcastle's afternoon took another turn for the worse when Tino Livramento appeared to limp off with a groin injury, sparking concerns that his season might be over, which could also be a worry for England ahead of the World Cup.
Newcastle's hopes were dashed again in the 85th minute when Truffert gave Bournemouth the lead. Truffert initiated the move, finding Tavernier on the left, whose cross was met by Evanilson between two defenders before Truffert followed up to poke the loose ball past Aaron Ramsdale. This marks the third consecutive Premier League game where Newcastle has conceded match-losing goals after the 80th minute, highlighting their ongoing struggle to hold onto points. As nine minutes of injury time were added, Guimaraes drew another fine save from Petrovic, and Burn missed a header over the bar as Newcastle suffered yet another defeat.
Newcastle remains in 14th place with 42 points, six points behind Bournemouth, who are in eighth place with 48 points, level with Brentford and Chelsea, thus boosting their own European aspirations. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports, expressed his thoughts: "I don't believe we performed at our best. The game was quite even, with not much separating the teams except for their productivity in front of goal, which ultimately decided the outcome. They are on a good run of form and playing with confidence, whereas we are at the opposite end of that spectrum.
"The atmosphere at St James' Park is flat, which is understandable given our recent form. We are not playing to our usual standard, and you have to accept the rough with the smooth. We are not delivering what we want, and there's frustration all around.
This season could have been different, but we are where we are, and it's frustrating for everyone. "I have no issue with the expectations placed upon us.
We are here to win games and achieve great things. There's no lack of effort or hard work from me or the players, but we are not delivering a good enough product at the moment, and we are trying to find the answers." Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola, also speaking to Sky Sports, said: "I think we played really well, especially in the first half. In the second half, it was expected that Newcastle would react, and they did push us.
At 1-1, the momentum of the game changed, but we showed composure and deserved the win. "Coming here as an away team is very difficult, and you have to be ready to match their intensity. Newcastle is very good on transition and fast on the last line, so you can lose those races. But overall, we defended very well.
"We are in a great place with a great run of results. We are entering the important part of the season, and we have our chances.
It's difficult because there are teams ahead of us, but we have five games to try and catch up, to continue playing well and keep this unbeaten run going as long as we can. The players have shown they are not taking days off."
