Fitzpatrick Edges Out Scheffler in Thrilling PGA Tour Play-Off

Matt Fitzpatrick has secured his second PGA Tour victory of the season, overcoming a nervy finish to defeat world number one Scottie Scheffler in a play-off at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick had begun the final day with a three-shot lead and seemed in control after extending his advantage with two birdies in his first three holes. However, Scheffler launched a stunning comeback, closing with consecutive birdies to force a play-off after Fitzpatrick bogeyed the final hole. The Englishman regained his composure to claim victory on the first extra hole, firing his approach to 12 feet and sinking the birdie putt. 'I got off to a great start and knew Scottie would make a few birdies, so I had to hang in there,' Fitzpatrick said. This win elevates Fitzpatrick to a career-high world ranking of third and makes him the fourth Englishman to achieve multiple PGA Tour titles in the same season. Fitzpatrick started strongly, birdieing the first hole from 10 feet, but failed to capitalize on the par-five second, where Scheffler reduced the deficit to three shots. A 15-foot birdie at the third restored Fitzpatrick's four-shot cushion, but both players missed opportunities to pull further ahead. The pair traded pars until Scheffler birdied the ninth to reach 16 under, with both players then missing the green in regulation at the 10th before securing close-range pars. As the round progressed, Si Woo Kim temporarily cut Fitzpatrick's lead to two shots with a birdie at the par-five 15th, but Scheffler responded with a brilliant up-and-down from the sand to join Kim in second place. Scheffler then claimed solo second with a 10-foot birdie at the 16th, moving within a shot of Fitzpatrick, who edged closer to the finish line with pars before a clumsy chip from the back of the final green led to a two-putt bogey. In the play-off, Fitzpatrick composed himself to find the green in regulation, while Scheffler finished short and faced a challenging par putt. Fitzpatrick coaxed in his birdie putt to claim a second PGA Tour win in three starts. Scheffler's runner-up finish is his second in consecutive weeks, following his near-miss at The Masters. Kim finished third, two strokes behind, after a final-round 68. 'This was one of those weeks where anytime Fitzpatrick needed something to happen, he made it happen,' Scheffler said. 'He definitely earned the win and played great golf.' The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where Fitzpatrick will partner his brother Alex in the two-man team event.
