Matt Fitzpatrick has secured his second PGA Tour victory of the season, overcoming a late wobble to defeat world number one Scottie Scheffler in a play-off at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick had begun the final day with a three-shot lead at Harbour Town Golf Links and initially extended his advantage, but Scheffler's back-to-back birdies and Fitzpatrick's bogey on the final hole forced a play-off.
Fitzpatrick regained his composure to win the play-off with a birdie, claiming his second RBC Heritage title in four years and rising to a career-high world ranking of third. The Englishman's victory also makes him the fourth English player to achieve multiple PGA Tour wins in the same season, following Sir Nick Faldo, Justin Rose, and Luke Donald.
Fitzpatrick had started strongly, with birdies in two of his first three holes, but Scheffler's late surge set up a thrilling finish. The two players were evenly matched throughout the day, with neither able to gain a decisive advantage until Fitzpatrick's play-off birdie.
Scheffler's runner-up finish is his second in consecutive weeks, after he finished behind Rory McIlroy at The Masters. The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where Fitzpatrick will partner his brother Alex Fitzpatrick in the two-man team event.
