Rahm Secures Victory in Mexico as LIV Golf Faces Uncertainty

Jon Rahm wrapped up a tumultuous week on the LIV Golf tour with a resounding win, carding a 7-under 64 on Sunday to claim a six-stroke victory at the LIV Golf Mexico City event, marking his second win this year on the Saudi-backed circuit. The week was marked by uncertainty surrounding the Saudi-funded league's financial stability, prompting CEO Scott O'Neil to issue a memo to staff assuring them that funding was secure through the end of the year. This move aimed to alleviate growing concerns about the league's future. Reports had surfaced that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) was planning to withdraw its financial support for the circuit, further fueling speculation. A power outage on Tuesday and a two-hour streaming disruption during the opening round added to the chaos. Despite the challenges, LIV Golf announced its return to Chapultepec Golf Club next year. Rahm, who went winless last season on LIV despite claiming the points title, had previously experienced disappointment at Chapultepec in 2017 during a World Golf Championship. This time, however, Rahm left no doubt about his victory, making a birdie on the par-4 second hole and following it up with an eagle on the next, playing bogey-free throughout. Rahm expressed his surprise at the victory, stating, 'If you had told me last week on Thursday afternoon that I'd be winning by a six-shot margin this week, I wouldn't have believed you, given how poorly I played.' He had tied for 38th in the Masters. Bryson DeChambeau withdrew from the final round due to a wrist injury, citing concerns about aggravating the condition. At the time of his withdrawal, DeChambeau was 16 shots behind Rahm. DeChambeau, who was attempting to become the first player to win three consecutive LIV Golf events, announced his withdrawal on social media, saying, 'I experienced some discomfort in my wrist during yesterday's round and have decided to withdraw from the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City to prevent further injury.' He hopes to be back in action at LIV Golf Virginia on May 7-10. Rahm's win was accompanied by the success of his Legion XIII team, which secured its first win of the year. David Puig finished second with a 66, earning valuable world ranking points and virtually guaranteeing his spot in the PGA Championship. Another strong finish in Virginia could potentially qualify him for the US Open. The next LIV Golf League event, LIV Golf Virginia, is scheduled to take place from May 7-10 at Trump National Golf Club in Washington DC.
