Fitzpatrick Claims Thrilling Play-Off Victory at RBC Heritage

Matt Fitzpatrick has revealed that words of encouragement from his caddie, similar to those used by Rory McIlroy's caddie during his 2025 Grand Slam win, inspired him to a dramatic play-off victory at the RBC Heritage on Sunday. Fitzpatrick had let a four-shot lead slip away during the final round at Harbour Town Golf Links, but he responded by firing his approach on the first extra play-off hole to within 12 feet and rolling in a winning birdie putt to clinch his fourth PGA Tour title. The Englishman's caddie, Daniel Parratt, used a phrase that McIlroy's caddie, Harry Diamond, had used during McIlroy's Masters win, telling Fitzpatrick 'we'd have taken this start of the week' as they approached the play-off. Fitzpatrick joked that Parratt was channeling Diamond, and the phrase seemed to inspire him as he went on to win the tournament. Fitzpatrick had taken a three-shot lead into the final day and was briefly four clear, but a late stumble and back-to-back birdies from Scottie Scheffler forced a play-off. Fitzpatrick held his nerve to emerge victorious, and he praised the crowd for creating a lively atmosphere, even if they were largely cheering for his opponent. Scheffler also praised the fans, saying they were 'pretty cordial' in their support for him. The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a two-man team event at TPC Louisiana.
