Marie-Louise Eta Makes History as First Female Head Coach in Top European Leagues

Marie-Louise Eta has broken new ground by becoming the first female head coach in the top five European men's leagues, taking the reins at Union Berlin. Eta will initially serve as interim coach for the men's team, with the goal of securing their position in the Bundesliga, before transitioning to her planned role as head coach of the women's team. She previously made history in 2023 as the first woman to hold an assistant coaching position in the Bundesliga and the top divisions of Europe's major leagues. Union Berlin's sporting director, Horst Heldt, expressed his delight at Eta's appointment, citing her experience and ability to lead the team through challenging situations. Eta replaces Steffen Baumgart, who was let go following the team's recent loss. The appointment has been praised by England manager Sarina Wiegman, who sees Eta as a trailblazer for women in football. Eta's journey is not an isolated incident, as other women, such as Sabrina Wittmann, have also made strides in the sport, paving the way for future generations of female coaches.
