Hull FC Announces Coaching Change: Cartwright Departs, McNamara to Arrive in 2027

John Cartwright has stepped down as Hull FC's head coach, effective immediately, paving the way for Steve McNamara to assume the role from the 2027 Betfred Super League season. Although Cartwright will remain a Hull FC employee, he has relinquished his coaching duties. Assistant coach Andy Last will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the current season. McNamara, who will continue as Warrington Wolves' assistant coach for the 2026 campaign, is set to return to his boyhood club, where he began his playing career. As a player, McNamara made over 160 senior appearances for Hull FC between 1989 and 1996 and represented England and Great Britain. With a distinguished coaching career spanning two decades, McNamara has worked with notable teams such as Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side, as well as holding assistant coach positions with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors in the NRL. During his tenure with Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to their most successful period, which included a Challenge Cup final win, a League Leaders Shield, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed his delight at securing McNamara's services, stating, "He is a coach of the highest calibre, and someone who truly understands this club and the city." Andrew Thirkill, Hull FC chairman, added, "We believe Steve is the right person to lead Hull FC into our next phase and are thrilled with his appointment. His experience, leadership, and standards will be critical as we build a team capable of competing consistently at the top of Super League."
