Alcaraz Off to a Winning Start in Barcelona Despite Injury Concern

Less than 48 hours after his Monte-Carlo Masters final loss to Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz recovered from an injury concern to defeat Otto Virtanen, securing a spot in the Barcelona Open's last 16. The Spanish player, who needs to win the tournament to reclaim the world's top ranking from Sinner, secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Finland's Virtanen despite requiring a medical timeout due to a wrist issue at the end of the first set. Alcaraz, however, showed no signs of physical discomfort during his 85-minute first-round win on home soil. He has now achieved his fourth Barcelona R16, won 27 of his last 29 matches on clay, and secured his 22nd win of 2026. "Returning home and winning in front of my people in Barcelona means everything to me," Alcaraz said, who will face Czech player Tomas Machac on Thursday. "This morning was my first practice here, adapting to the conditions, which differ from those in Monte Carlo. Overall, I am really happy with how I played and the problems I solved in the first set. I ended up playing great tennis, so hopefully, I will feel a little better in the next round." Alcaraz is chasing his third title this season, following his career Grand Slam win at the Australian Open and his triumph at the ATP 500 event in Doha. The opportunity to quickly reclaim the world's top ranking from Sinner provides Alcaraz with additional motivation for this week's tournament, but steady improvement during the clay season remains his top priority. With Sinner absent from the draw, Alcaraz's chances of winning are boosted. "I won't miss him this week," Alcaraz joked in his pre-tournament press conference. "I know I need to win the tournament to regain the number one ranking. The battle between Jannik and me is great, and it probably provides extra motivation. However, we are focused, and my mind is set on staying on our current path, trying to keep improving. We are clear about what we need to do in training and matches; results and points are just extra motivation." Alcaraz hopes to play a full schedule on clay this season, with upcoming events in Madrid and Rome before defending his French Open title in Paris on May 24.
