England Rugby Veteran Joe Launchbury Announces Retirement

Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed his decision to retire from professional rugby at the end of the current season. With 70 international caps to his name between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury has enjoyed a storied career, claiming three Six Nations titles and participating in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Since joining Harlequins in 2023, following a stint with Japanese club Toyota Verblitz, Launchbury has made 50 appearances, although his playing time has been limited to just six games this term. In a statement on the Harlequins' website, Launchbury reflected on his decision, stating, "The time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season." He expressed his gratitude to his teammates, past and present, and acknowledged the profound impact rugby has had on his life, providing him with a sense of purpose, lasting friendships, and unforgettable memories. Launchbury, who has given his all to his career, feels that his body now needs a break, and while he hopes to remain involved in the sport, he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and watching his children grow up.
