Hull FC Announces Coaching Change: Cartwright Exits, McNamara to Take Helm in 2027

John Cartwright has stepped down as Hull FC's head coach, effective immediately, as the club prepares for Steve McNamara's takeover in 2027. McNamara, who will join his boyhood club, has agreed to a deal that will see him lead Hull FC into the 2027 Betfred Super League season. In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will assume the head coach role for the remainder of the current season. McNamara, a respected figure in the sport, will continue to serve as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the rest of the 2026 campaign. With a storied playing career that includes over 160 senior appearances and international representation, McNamara has also established himself as a leading coach, with a distinguished career spanning two decades and including tenures with Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side. His coaching experience extends to the NRL, where he worked as an assistant coach with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors. During his time with Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to unprecedented success, including a Challenge Cup final win, a League Leaders Shield, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed his delight at securing McNamara's services, stating, 'Steve is a coach of the highest caliber, and someone who truly understands this club and the city.' Chairman Andrew Thirkill added, 'We believe Steve is the right person to lead Hull FC into our next phase and are thrilled with his appointment. His experience, leadership, and standards will be critical as we build a team capable of competing consistently at the top of Super League.' Sky Sports will continue to broadcast every Super League game live this season, including two exclusive matches per round and the remaining five matches each week on Sky Sports+.
