Sinner Regains Top Spot in ATP Rankings with Victory over Alcaraz in Monte Carlo

Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the number one spot in the world rankings after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Masters. Sinner navigated the challenging weather conditions in Monaco more effectively than Alcaraz, securing a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win and reclaiming the top spot in the ATP rankings for the first time since November 2025. This victory marked Sinner's first win over Alcaraz on clay since 2022 and extended his unbeaten run at Masters tournaments to 22 matches. Sinner expressed his delight at regaining the number one spot, stating, 'The result is amazing. Returning to number one means a great deal to me.' Alcaraz praised Sinner's achievement, saying, 'It's impressive what you're accomplishing right now. Winning the Sunshine Double and Monte-Carlo is incredible. Congratulations on the work you're doing with your team.' The 17th meeting between the two tennis superstars will not be remembered as a classic due to the difficult weather conditions. Alcaraz started strongly, breaking Sinner's serve immediately, but Sinner quickly leveled the score at 2-2. Neither player was able to gain a decisive advantage in the first set, despite Sinner having break point opportunities in the fifth and ninth games. Sinner eventually won the set in a tie-break after 74 minutes. In the second set, Alcaraz initially broke Sinner's serve, but the Australian Open champion struggled to hold his own serve, allowing Sinner to capitalize on his errors and level the score at 3-3. Sinner then won the next three games, taking advantage of Alcaraz's frustration and variability in his play to secure his first Monte-Carlo Masters title. The two players will now decide whether to compete against each other again in Barcelona, where Britain's Jack Draper will also be in action, before the ATP 1000 events in Madrid and Rome leading up to the French Open at the end of May. Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva won the Linz Open on Sunday, defeating Anastasia Potapova 1-6 6-4 6-3. Andreeva had to come back from a set down to claim her second WTA title and fourth of her career. During the presentation ceremony, Andreeva praised Potapova, saying, 'I was struggling to find a solution to play against you today. You're an amazing fighter and an even better person.' Potapova, who switched allegiance to Austria in December, expressed her gratitude for the support she received from the crowd, stating, 'Playing here for the first time as an Austrian means the world to me.'
