Hull FC Announces Coaching Change: Cartwright Departs, McNamara to Take Over in 2027

John Cartwright has stepped down as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately. Steve McNamara, who will take over the position in 2027, has been announced as his replacement. McNamara will return to his hometown club, where he began his career as a junior and went on to make over 160 senior appearances between 1989 and 1996. A renowned coach with a distinguished career, McNamara has led teams such as Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side, in addition to serving as an assistant coach in the NRL. During his tenure with the Dragons, McNamara led the team to its most successful period, including a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield win, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Andy Last, assistant coach, will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the current season. McNamara will continue to work as an assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the remainder of the 2026 campaign. According to Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler, "securing Steve's services is a significant coup for the club, as he is a coach of the highest caliber who truly understands this club and the city." Hull FC chairman Andrew Thirkill added that McNamara's experience, leadership, and standards will be crucial in building a team capable of competing consistently at the top of Super League.
