Wrexham has reignited its play-off aspirations in the Sky Bet Championship with a decisive 2-0 victory over Stoke at home. Following Hull's draw with Birmingham, Wrexham narrowed the gap to sixth place to just two points with three matches remaining. The initial anxiety at the SToK Cae Ras, stemming from consecutive losses to Southampton and Birmingham, was alleviated by first-half goals from George Thomason and Josh Windass within a minute of each other.
For Stoke, this marked their sixth consecutive away defeat, dropping them to 17th place. Wrexham's manager, Phil Parkinson, made four changes to the lineup after back-to-back defeats, including a notable switch in goal with Wales international Danny Ward starting over Arthur Okonkwo.
Wrexham began the match with urgency, and there were early calls for a penalty after Sam Smith was shoved by Bosun Lawal. However, the referee was uninterested, and the contact might have been outside the box. The breakthrough came when Thomason's corner flew over the head of Gavin Bazunu into the net, followed by Windass scoring his 13th league goal of the season just over a minute later.
After the break, Stoke showed some ambition but were unable to capitalize on their chances. Wrexham almost scored a third when Jesurun Rak-Sakyi's panicked clearance struck Smith but flew to safety. In the closing moments, Stoke came close to reducing the deficit when Lamine Cisse hit the crossbar, but their final hopes dissipated when Million Manhoef drove wide.
Phil Parkinson reflected on the win, emphasizing the team's goal to take the play-off race to the wire and not relinquish the opportunity to other teams. He also acknowledged the bonus of Hull's draw with Birmingham and looked forward to the upcoming match against Oxford.
