Marie-Louise Eta Makes History as First Female Head Coach in Top Five European Leagues

In a groundbreaking move, Marie-Louise Eta has been appointed as the head coach of Union Berlin, becoming the first female to hold this position in the top five European leagues. Eta will initially take on an interim role, overseeing the men's team for the remaining five games of the season, before transitioning to her planned position as head coach of the women's team in the summer. This appointment follows her historic achievement in 2023 as the first woman to serve as an assistant coach in the Bundesliga and the top divisions of Europe's major leagues. Union sporting director Horst Heldt expressed his delight at Eta's agreement to take on the interim role, stating, "I'm delighted that Marie Louise Eta has agreed to take on this role on an interim basis before she becomes head coach of the women's first team as planned in the summer." Eta herself acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying, "Given the points gap in the lower half of the table, our place in the Bundesliga is not yet secure. I am delighted the club has entrusted me with this challenging task." Her appointment comes after the departure of Steffen Baumgart, who was let go along with his assistants Danilo de Souza and Kevin McKenna, following the team's 3-1 loss to Heidenheim. England manager Sarina Wiegman praised Eta's appointment, calling her a "trailblazer" and expressing excitement for the future of women in football. The move has also drawn praise from Sabrina Wittmann, the first woman to coach a men's team in Germany's top three divisions, who reflected on her own experiences and the importance of women in football.
