Fitzpatrick Edges Scheffler in Thrilling PGA Tour Play-off

Matt Fitzpatrick claimed his second PGA Tour victory of the season, overcoming a late stumble to defeat world No 1 Scottie Scheffler in a play-off at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick had started the final day with a three-shot lead at Harbour Town Golf Links and seemed in control after extending his advantage with two birdies in his first three holes. However, Scheffler surged back into contention with consecutive birdies, and Fitzpatrick's bogey on the final hole forced a play-off. The Englishman regained his composure, firing his approach to 12 feet on the first extra hole and sinking the birdie to secure his second RBC Heritage title in four years. "I had a great start, and I knew Scottie would make some birdies towards the end, so I had to hold on," Fitzpatrick said. The win propelled Fitzpatrick to a career-high world ranking of No 3 and made him the fourth Englishman to achieve multiple PGA Tour wins in the same season, joining Sir Nick Faldo, Justin Rose, and Luke Donald. Fitzpatrick had started strongly, with a 10-foot birdie on the first hole, but Scheffler stayed within three shots after tidying up from close range on the par-five second. A 15-foot birdie from Fitzpatrick at the third gave him a four-shot cushion, which he maintained until Scheffler birdied the ninth to reach 16 under. The pair traded pars until Si Woo Kim temporarily cut Fitzpatrick's lead to two with a birdie on the 15th, but Scheffler responded with a brilliant up-and-down from the sand to join Kim in second place. Scheffler then moved within a shot of Fitzpatrick with a 10-foot birdie on the 16th, setting up a tense finish. Fitzpatrick's clunky chip on the final hole led to a bogey, forcing the play-off, where he composed himself to find the green in regulation and claim the victory with a birdie. Scheffler's runner-up finish was his second in consecutive weeks, following his second-place finish at The Masters. Kim finished third, two strokes behind Fitzpatrick, after a final-round 68. "This was one of those weeks where Matt needed something to happen, and he made it happen," Scheffler said. "He earned the win and played great golf." Ludvig Åberg finished fourth on 13 under, alongside Collin Morikawa and Harris English, while Bud Cauley claimed seventh ahead of Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland. Keegan Bradley and Xander Schauffele ended the week on 10 under, and Viktor Hovland posted a five-over 76 to finish tied-42nd. The PGA Tour heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a two-man team event at TPC Louisiana, where Fitzpatrick will partner his brother Alex Fitzpatrick.
