Can Luke Humphries Overcome His Struggles to Defend His Premier League Title?

As the Premier League season progresses, defending champion Luke Humphries is facing an uphill battle to secure a top-four spot and a chance to defend his title at the O2 in London on May 28. Currently sitting seventh in the table with 11 points after 10 weeks, Humphries is yet to achieve his first nightly victory. A recent 6-5 defeat to leader Jonny Clayton in Brighton has added to his woes, with Clayton finishing with a bullseye to edge a last-leg decider. With time running out, experts Michael Bridge and Chris Murphy discussed Humphries' chances of turning his season around on the Love The Darts podcast. "Luke isn't dominating like he used to," Bridge said. "He's getting his life back on track, and I don't think the pressure of defending his title is getting to him as much as it would have a couple of years ago." Humphries has six more nights to gain enough points to reach the Play-Off spots, with seven-time winner Michael van Gerwen currently occupying fourth spot on 16 points - five points ahead of Humphries. Commentator Murphy believes that while Humphries is running out of time, he is the one player outside the Play-Offs who could go on a winning streak and catapult himself into the top four. "I don't think it's complete panic stations yet, but he is running out of time and needs to get that nightly win," Murphy said. Humphries remains unconcerned about his title defence, stating that he doesn't feel the pressure of defending. "You're not thinking about it every week you're playing in it," he said. "I think my average this year in the Premier League has been the best it has ever been."
