Hull FC Announces Coaching Change: Cartwright Exits, McNamara to Take Helm in 2027

John Cartwright has stepped down as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately, paving the way for Steve McNamara to take the reins from 2027. McNamara, a former Hull FC player, will join the team after completing his current assistant coaching role at Warrington Wolves for the remainder of the 2026 season. In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will lead the team for the rest of the current season. McNamara's appointment marks a homecoming for the respected coach, who rose through the youth ranks at Hull FC before enjoying a distinguished playing and coaching career. As a player, McNamara made over 160 senior appearances for Hull FC between 1989 and 1996, also representing England and Great Britain internationally. His coaching career has spanned over two decades, with notable successes including a Challenge Cup final win, a League Leaders Shield, and two Super League Grand Final appearances during his time at Catalans Dragons. Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed his delight at securing McNamara's services, stating that he is a 'coach of the highest calibre' who truly understands the club and the city. Chairman Andrew Thirkill also welcomed McNamara's appointment, citing his experience, leadership, and high standards as critical factors in the team's future success.
