Hull FC Announces Coaching Change as Cartwright Exits, Paving Way for McNamara's 2027 Arrival

In a significant development, John Cartwright has stepped down as Hull FC's head coach, effective immediately. This move comes as Steve McNamara is slated to assume the role starting from the 2027 Betfred Super League season, following an agreement between Hull FC and Warrington Wolves. Although Cartwright will remain an employee of Hull FC, he has relinquished his coaching duties. Assistant coach Andy Last has been appointed as the interim head coach for the remainder of the current season. Meanwhile, McNamara will continue to serve as an assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the rest of the 2026 campaign. Notably, McNamara's return to his boyhood club marks a homecoming, where he initially rose through the youth ranks before embarking on a distinguished playing career that included over 160 senior appearances and international representation. As a seasoned coach with a career spanning two decades, McNamara has made his mark with various teams, including Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side, as well as stints in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors. During his tenure with the Dragons, McNamara led the team to unprecedented success, highlighted by a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield win, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC's chief executive, Richie Myler, expressed his enthusiasm for McNamara's appointment, stating, 'We are thrilled to secure Steve's services, as he is a coach of the highest caliber who truly understands this club and the city.' Similarly, Hull FC's chairman, Andrew Thirkill, welcomed McNamara's return, emphasizing his experience, leadership, and standards as crucial in building a competitive team. This season, Sky Sports will once again broadcast every Super League game live, featuring two exclusive matches per round and the remaining five matches on Sky Sports+.
