Draper's Barcelona Campaign Cut Short Due to Injury as Norrie Advances

Jack Draper's clay-court season got off to a disappointing start as he was forced to retire from his first-round match against Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry at the Barcelona Open due to an injury. Despite initially taking the lead by winning the first set 6-3, Draper struggled with mobility issues and eventually had to withdraw from the match in the third set, trailing 4-1. Draper, who is ranked higher than Etcheverry in the ATP rankings, had shown promise but was hindered by a knee issue from the start of the second set, allowing Etcheverry to gain control. Etcheverry praised Draper, saying, 'He was playing unbelievably... He is a great competitor, a great fighter, and hopefully, he can recover soon to get back on tour because the tour likes him.' This was Draper's fourth tournament since returning to the ATP Tour after a left-arm injury kept him sidelined since last August's US Open. He is scheduled to play next at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Madrid, starting April 22. Meanwhile, British No 1 Cameron Norrie secured a spot in the second round with a grueling three-set victory over three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka. Norrie won 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-4, praising his mental resilience in the face of physical challenges. Norrie will face American Ethan Quinn in the next round.
