Garcia Offers Apology for Outburst at Masters Tournament

Sergio Garcia has issued a public apology for his on-course outburst during the final round of The Masters. The incident occurred after a disappointing drive on the second hole, prompting Garcia to damage the turf and subsequently break his driver against a bench. In a statement posted on social media, Garcia expressed regret for his actions, stating, "I want to apologize for my behavior at The Masters tournament. I have immense respect and appreciation for The Masters and Augusta National Golf Club, and I regret the way I acted, as it has no place in our game." Garcia's apology comes after he received a code-of-conduct warning from Geoff Yang, chairman of The Masters competitions committee, on the fourth tee. The warning was issued in accordance with the tournament's new conduct policy, which was introduced this year. The policy states that a second violation during the tournament will result in a two-shot penalty, while a third violation will lead to disqualification. Garcia, the 2017 Masters champion, had a disappointing tournament, beginning with a bogey and struggling with his game throughout. When questioned about the incident, Garcia declined to discuss the details, saying, "I'm not going to tell you." He also failed to apologize for his behavior immediately after his round, instead stating, "Just obviously not super proud of it, but sometimes it happens." Garcia has struggled to replicate his 2017 success, failing to finish in the top 10 in the 29 majors he has played since his victory at Augusta National. His record at The Masters has been particularly disappointing, with six missed cuts in eight appearances since his win. Garcia has a history of on-course outbursts, including being disqualified from the Saudi International in 2019 for damaging greens in frustration. The PGA Tour has been developing its code-of-conduct policy over the past few years, with The Masters being the first tournament to implement it. The policy will also be used at the PGA Championship next month at Aronimink Golf Club.
