Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed his decision to hang up his boots at the end of the current season. With 70 international caps to his name between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury has enjoyed a storied career, claiming three Six Nations titles and participating in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups.
Since joining Harlequins in 2023, following a stint with Toyota Verblitz in Japan, Launchbury has made 50 appearances, although his playing time has been limited to just six games this term. In a statement on the Harlequins' website, Launchbury expressed that the time has come for him to step away from the sport, saying, "It has been an impending decision, and it feels right to retire at the end of this season." He reflected on his illustrious career, expressing gratitude for the opportunities to represent England, Wasps, and Harlequins, as well as his time in Japan. Launchbury also thanked his teammates, past and present, for the camaraderie and memories they have shared, emphasizing that rugby has provided him with a sense of purpose, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable experiences.
Although his body is telling him it's time for a break, Launchbury hopes to remain involved in the sport in some capacity. For now, he is eager to spend more time with his family and watch his children grow up.
