Ronnie O'Sullivan Faces Chinese Newcomer He Guoqiang at the World Snooker Championship

Seven-time champion Ronnie O'Sullivan is set to face Chinese debutant He Guoqiang in his bid for a record eighth World Snooker Championship title. He, ranked 47th in the world, secured his spot by defeating Jack Lisowski in the qualifying rounds and will make his Crucible debut against O'Sullivan. The 25-year-old has a strong head-to-head record against O'Sullivan, having won two of their previous three meetings. He is one of 11 Chinese players participating in the tournament, which includes defending champion Zhao Xintong. Zhao will face Liam Highfield in the opening match, a year after becoming China's first world champion. Other notable matchups include four-time champion John Higgins against two-time runner-up Ali Carter and four-time winner Mark Selby taking on 2024 finalist Jak Jones. The tournament begins on Sunday and concludes on May 3-4. Since the introduction of 32 players in the first round in 1982, all 16 top seeds have never advanced to the second round. Zhao will aim to overcome the 'Crucible Curse' and become the first maiden winner to successfully defend the title, a feat that has eluded 21 players since 1980. O'Sullivan will make a record 34th straight appearance at the iconic venue, having last reached the semi-finals as a first-time champion in 2002. The full first-round draw will feature 24 different champions, with Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O'Sullivan currently holding the record for most crowns won.
