Potential Consequences for West Brom Following Alleged PSR Breach

The English Football League (EFL) has charged West Brom with an alleged breach of Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules. According to Sky Sports News' football correspondent Rob Dorsett, the situation is complex and uncertain. West Brom submitted their accounts in December, but negotiations regarding allowable expenditure have been ongoing. The main issue appears to be interest paid on loans taken out by the club's previous owner, Guochuan Lai. If found guilty, West Brom may face a minimal points deduction, potentially three points. However, the timing of the ruling and any potential appeal could impact the relegation battle. The EFL guidelines state that punishments for PSR breaches should be handed down in the season following the breach, maintaining sporting integrity. The final outcome may be delayed due to appeals, as seen in previous cases. Five clubs, including West Brom, are currently battling to avoid relegation, making the situation increasingly uncertain. The EFL is committed to resolving the matter as soon as possible, but the independent commission's decision may not be made until the end of the season. West Brom's new owners, Bilkul, have paid around £5m in interest on a £20m loan and believe these payments should not be included in the club's PSR calculations. The EFL, however, considers the interest a fundamental part of the club's expenditure. The club remains adamant that they have complied with the rules and will continue to cooperate with the EFL's investigation.
