LIV Golf's CEO, Scott O'Neil, has alleviated concerns about the series' funding, stating that it is 'funded through the season' and that they will 'work tirelessly' to ensure its continuation, amidst speculation that its Saudi backers may withdraw financial support. The breakaway golf league, backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), has been at the center of speculation this week, with reports suggesting that the PIF may be considering ending its funding, which has reportedly reached $5 billion since the series' inception in 2021. O'Neil's comments came after LIV team captain Sergio Garcia alluded to funding being in place until 2030, but O'Neil played down fears, stating that the league has commitments in place to ensure its continuation. He added that the reality is that the league is funded through the season, and then works to create a business plan to keep it going, similar to any other private equity-funded business.
Earlier in the week, O'Neil informed LIV staff that the season would continue uninterrupted, but made no reference to anything beyond this season. The PIF has not commented on the matter, and no official decision has been made. Reports emerged after the PIF announced its four-year strategy, with governor Yasir Al Rumayyan stating that some deals and investments were being reviewed due to economic feasibility or the Middle East conflict. Some LIV Golf players were reportedly confused by the reports and sought reassurance from LIV chiefs, but Ryder Cup star Jon Rahm stated that he was 'not too worried' about LIV's future, adding that he wasn't informed of any imminent announcement and was focused on preparing for the tournament.
