Garnacho Reflects on Manchester United Departure: 'I Made Some Mistakes'

Alejandro Garnacho has spoken candidly about his exit from Manchester United, acknowledging that he made mistakes during his final six months at the club. Garnacho's £40m transfer to Chelsea last summer came after he was left out of Ruben Amorim's first-team squad during pre-season. Prior to his departure, Garnacho sparked controversy by wearing an Aston Villa shirt with Marcus Rashford's name on the back. Following Manchester United's Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, Garnacho's brother accused Amorim of betraying his trust. When questioned about his regrets over leaving Old Trafford, Garnacho expressed mixed emotions, stating, 'Maybe yes, because I loved that club. They gave me confidence from the start, bringing me from Spain to the academy and then to the first team.' Garnacho recalled that during his last six months at Manchester United, he was not playing as well as he had previously and was often benched. He admitted, 'I was only 20 years old, but in my mind, I had to play every game. Maybe it's also my fault, I started doing some bad things.' Despite this, Garnacho expressed pride in his decision to join Chelsea, saying, 'Sometimes you have to make decisions, and I'm really proud to be here and still in the Premier League at a club like this.' Garnacho emphasized that he holds no grudges against Manchester United, the club, or his former teammates, viewing his departure as a natural part of life. Amorim reflected on Garnacho's departure, suggesting that the player sought a new challenge with different leadership. The Manchester United manager stated, 'You can understand and you can see he's a really talented boy, and sometimes things don't work out.' With Michael Carrick potentially becoming the new Manchester United manager, the club's search for a successor to Sir Alex Ferguson continues. Carrick has made a strong case for the position, having won seven of his 10 games since January and lifting United to third in the Premier League.
