The Darker Side of Women's Sports: Abuse, Threats, and Harassment

Female athletes face intense scrutiny and abuse, from criticism of their appearance to death threats and stalking. Despite their success, many sportswomen are subjected to derogatory comments and negativity outside of their sporting arenas, adding an extra layer of pressure to their already demanding careers. The issue is not limited to a specific sport, with tennis players, rugby athletes, and cricketers all experiencing similar forms of abuse. A survey by Women In Sport found that the number of girls who dream of becoming professional athletes has fallen to its lowest level since 2020, with many citing feelings of not belonging in sports and worrying about their safety. The constant barrage of criticism and abuse can have a profound impact on a player's mental health and confidence, with some athletes feeling forced to stay quiet or hide their true selves in order to avoid further abuse. However, some sportswomen are fighting back, using their platforms to speak out against abuse and promote positivity and inclusivity. The Online Safety Act 2023 has imposed strict duties on social media companies to combat online abuse, but more needs to be done to protect female athletes from the level of abuse they face. As the visibility of women's sports continues to grow, it is essential that the focus shifts from how sportswomen look or behave to what they achieve, and that their personal safety, mental wellbeing, and identity are protected and respected.
