Milan's San Siro Stadium May Host ATP 250 Grass-Court Event Starting 2028

A new grass-court ATP 250 tournament, serving as a Wimbledon warm-up event, is set to take place in Milan from 2028. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to the event, previously held in Brussels. The tournament is expected to be hosted at the iconic San Siro stadium, which is home to AC Milan and Inter Milan, with a seating capacity of over 75,000. According to federation president Angelo Binaghi, the final decision on the venue has not been made, but the stadium's location in northern Italy makes it a strong contender due to climate considerations. Binaghi drew inspiration from the Madrid Open, which is introducing practice courts within Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu, suggesting that the San Siro could be a viable option. Italy has previously hosted a WTA grass-court tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. The federation is also hosting other prominent tennis events, including the ATP Finals in Turin through 2030 and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna. Additionally, work on a retractable roof for the Foro Italico's Campo Centrale is scheduled to begin after this year's Internazionali BNL d'Italia, with the aim of completion by the 2028 edition. Binaghi expressed his ambition to elevate the Rome tournament to the status of a fifth Grand Slam, rivaling the likes of Indian Wells and joining the ranks of the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
