England's veteran lock, Joe Launchbury, has confirmed his decision to retire from professional rugby at the conclusion of the current season. With 70 international caps to his name between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury has enjoyed a storied career, claiming three Six Nations championships and participating in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Since joining Harlequins in 2023, following a stint with Toyota Verblitz in Japan, Launchbury has made 50 appearances for the team, although his playing time has been limited to just six games this term. In a statement on the Harlequins' website, Launchbury expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he has had, saying, "The time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season." Reflecting on his career, he noted, "To have worn the England shirt 70 times, to have given so many years to Wasps, to have had the honour of representing Harlequins, and to experience a season in Japan...
I've been so fortunate to represent the teams I have." Launchbury also thanked his teammates, past and present, for the friendships and memories they have shared, stating, "Rugby has given me more than I ever dreamed of. Not just a career, but a life filled with purpose and friendships as well as memories that will stay with me forever." He revealed that his body is telling him it needs a break, and while he hopes to remain involved in the sport, he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and watching his children grow up.
