The Significance of World Football Giving Day
On May 26, the global football community will unite for the inaugural World Football Giving Day, a groundbreaking initiative that brings people together to make a positive impact. With the support of over 100 organizations and prominent figures such as Jurgen Klopp, Juan Mata, and Vivianne Miedema, this movement aims to harness the power of football to drive social change. The idea is simple: to create a shared moment where everyone can participate and donate, fostering a sense of unity and collective action. World Football Giving Day is powered by Common Goal, a pioneering initiative launched by Juan Mata in 2017, where football figures pledge to donate one percent of their salaries to support projects around the world. To date, over 500 individuals have taken the pledge, raising millions for various causes. According to Mary Connor, CEO of Common Goal, 'Football can mirror the world or it can choose to shape it. At Common Goal, we choose the latter, using the game to drive positive outcomes, particularly for young people and communities.' Connor emphasizes that everyone can make a difference, saying, 'We have to take action, and we shouldn't leave that action to only the players. That's what World Football Giving Day is about – providing a moment when everyone who loves the game can do something.' The initiative has already seen success in various countries, including Vietnam and Nicaragua, where football has been used to challenge assumptions, promote education, and address social issues. As Connor notes, 'Football can challenge assumptions and bring people together, creating a spark of connection that transcends language, culture, and skin color.' This summer, World Football Giving Day will launch in the lead-up to the World Cup, aiming to become an annual event that mobilizes resources and unifies the global football community.
