Hull FC Announces Coaching Change: Cartwright Steps Down, McNamara to Take Over in 2027

John Cartwright has immediately stepped down as head coach of Hull FC, paving the way for Steve McNamara to take the reins from 2027. McNamara, who will join his boyhood club, has had a distinguished coaching career, with notable stints at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side. In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will lead the team for the remainder of the current season. McNamara will see out the 2026 campaign as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves before making the move. His playing career, which included over 160 senior appearances for Hull FC between 1989 and 1996, as well as international representation, has given him a deep understanding of the club and the city. According to Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler, "Steve McNamara coming home is a powerful moment for Hull FC," while chairman Andrew Thirkill expressed his belief that McNamara is the right person to lead the team into its next phase, citing his experience, leadership, and high standards as critical in building a team capable of competing at the top of Super League.
