Joel Tomkins Leaves Catalans Dragons Due to Personal Circumstances

Joel Tomkins has announced his decision to resign as head coach of Catalans Dragons, a position he held for nearly a year, citing personal reasons. The former England rugby league and union international found it challenging to be away from his family and, after spending time back home, opted to leave the team after seven games into the Super League season with the side currently sixth in the standings. Tomkins initially took on the role as an interim coach following Steve McNamara's departure but was later appointed to the permanent position at the club where he spent the last years of his playing career. "I've had the opportunity to experience many highs and challenges during my 18 months at Catalans Dragons, all of which I've valued greatly as a new head coach," Tomkins stated. "I've gained valuable knowledge, both personally and professionally, and I appreciate the friendships and experiences I've had. I'm leaving the club a better coach than when I arrived, but being away from my family for an extended period has been tough. After recently spending time at home due to personal reasons, I've decided to step down and bring my time at the club to a close. I'm grateful to the players, staff, and supporters, and I wish the club all the best for the remainder of the season and beyond." Tomkins was absent from the club's last three fixtures, which sparked speculation about his potential exit. Ryan Sheridan, along with assistant coaches Micky McIlorum and Mitchell Pearce, will take over as interim head coach, starting with the team's next game on April 18 against the top-of-the-table Warrington Wolves in the Super League. Sky Sports will continue to broadcast every Super League game live this season, including two exclusive matches per round and the remaining five matches each week on Sky Sports+.
