A new grass-court ATP 250 tournament is set to take place in Milan, Italy, starting from 2028, with the iconic San Siro stadium being considered as a potential venue. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to the tournament, which was previously held in Brussels. The event is expected to be held in June, and while the San Siro stadium, home to AC Milan and Inter Milan, is a likely candidate, a final decision has not been made yet. The federation's president, Angelo Binaghi, mentioned that the tournament will likely be held in northern Italy due to climate reasons.
This development comes after Italy successfully hosted a WTA tournament on grass in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, the federation is also hosting the ATP Finals in Turin until 2030 and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna until next year, as well as the Rome Masters on clay before the French Open. The Italian Tennis Federation is also working on installing a retractable roof for the Campo Centrale at the Foro Italico, which is expected to be ready for the 2028 edition. Binaghi expressed his ambition to make the tournament in Rome a fifth Grand Slam, competing with major events like Indian Wells.
Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner is also aiming to become the first Italian man to claim the singles title at the Foro Italico in 50 years.
