Hull FC Announces Change in Head Coach Position with Cartwright's Departure and McNamara's Upcoming Arrival

John Cartwright has stepped down as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately, paving the way for Steve McNamara to take the reins in 2027. Hull FC and Warrington Wolves have confirmed that McNamara will join Hull FC as their new head coach for the 2027 Betfred Super League season. Although Cartwright is no longer in the head coach role, he remains an employee of Hull FC. Assistant coach Andy Last will assume the position of interim head coach for the remainder of the current season. Meanwhile, McNamara will continue to serve as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the rest of the 2026 campaign. McNamara, who rose through the youth ranks at Hull FC, had a distinguished playing career with over 160 senior appearances between 1989 and 1996, including international representation with England and Great Britain. As a renowned coach, McNamara has had a successful career spanning two decades, with notable stints at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side, as well as in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors. During his time at Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield success, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed his delight at securing McNamara's services, stating that he is a coach of the highest caliber who truly understands the club and the city. Hull FC chairman Andrew Thirkill also welcomed McNamara's appointment, believing that his experience, leadership, and standards will be crucial in building a team capable of competing consistently at the top of Super League.
