Leeds Rhinos Dominate Huddersfield Giants with Croft's Four Tries
The Leeds Rhinos showcased their attacking prowess as they cruised to a 56-22 win over the Huddersfield Giants in the eighth round of the Super League at the Accu Stadium. This victory propelled the Rhinos to the top of the Super League table based on points difference, while the Giants slipped to 11th place. The Huddersfield team had entered the match on a high note, having secured wins against the Wigan Warriors and York Knights following the dismissal of their head coach, Luke Robinson, with assistant coach Liam Finn taking temporary charge. However, the Rhinos proved too strong, extending their own winning streak to three matches. Initially, it seemed the Giants might continue their winning run when Lachie Miller kicked out on the full, allowing the home team to take an early lead through George King. Despite this positive start, the visitors soon took control, scoring rapidly and consistently to wrap up the match before halftime. Brodie Croft initiated the scoring for Leeds, followed by Jarrod O'Connor, who utilized his game intelligence to step through the Giants' defense and put his side ahead. A well-placed pass from James McDonnell then enabled Jack Bird to score a try, which was soon followed by a milestone moment. Ryan Hall, the Super League's top try scorer, achieved his 250th try for Leeds, showcasing his strength from close range. Miller added to the Rhinos' dominant first half with a clever chip that he chased down himself. Just before the break, the Giants managed to respond with Jacob Dougles scoring in the corner, but they still trailed 28-10 at halftime. In the second half, Leeds continued their relentless attack, with Cameron Smith benefiting from a 40/20 by Jake Connor, and Croft scoring his second try. It wasn't long before Croft completed his hat-trick, although the Giants fought back through Jacob Gagai. Maika Sivo extended his try-scoring tally with his 15th try of the season, and Croft used his agile footwork to score his fourth try. Olly Russell scored a late try for the hosts, but it was too little, too late, as they succumbed to defeat. Despite the strong offensive performance, Leeds Rhinos head coach Brad Arthur expressed his disappointment with the team's defensive showing, emphasizing the need for more urgency and desperation. Arthur stated, 'We need to care more about our defense. It's not good enough. The boys were a bit flat in the sheds after that defensive performance. For the most part, it was good, but we lacked concentration and fell asleep at times.' He stressed the importance of being resilient on the try line and caring more about defense, acknowledging the team's desire to play an open, attacking game but also recognizing the need to balance this with solid defensive work.
